This is going to sound super lame but I'm uninspired atm. Not totally but all of my inspiration is being sucked up by jobs I HAVE to do, which isn't leaving much in the daydreaming/spontaneity department. My best work is totally organic, as in I see an object and dream a whole design plan around it. Pure inspiration. Sounds super self indulgent now that I think of it. Oh well, that's me. No one ever accused me of not indulging myself. I am loving having real design work but it is quite different than I had fantasized that it would be. You don't just walk into a person's home, budget unlimited and do whatever the hell you think is "amazing". You work within someone else's parameters, their vision, their timeline, their budget and sometimes with a couple that has conflicting design styles. That's why it's a called "work" I guess? Not an all expenses paid vacation. I'm not bitching, just making excuses as to why I'm not blogging more. Also, I'm just me and I'm a lazy bum.
I should not have led with I'm uninspired, I WAS uninspired but now I am VERY inspired. I've been kicking around two things lately, quietly in my brainspace, with no solution until a couple days ago. My bed is driving me bonkers and I want to do a huge bedroom redo on the little boys room. Actually, I want to move them across the hall into my studio. Which looks like this:
We haven't touched this room since we moved in, outside of pulling the decades old carpet. I actually think I'm going to participate in the One Room Challenge that culminates in April, which will require me to finish the project in 6 weeks. Here's the thing though, my house is over 150 years old. We gotta address some things before we can get to decorating. On the list of must do's, rewiring electrical and window restoration. I don't know the "rules" for the "ORC'' but I'm not walking into a ranch house built in 1986, so prior to the start of the challenge I want to get moving on these issues. It's been too long since my house was a construction zone!! I jest, but construction is a necessary evil to get to the good stuff. Also, as part of the ORC, I think week one you introduce the design plan, so I can't even show you what I'm going to do. But oh hell, here's a sneak peek. The theme is "adventure" and I'm not talking super heroes, more like Raiders of the Lost Ark, with none of the cheese. I picked these guys up yesterday and am also in love with this Justina Blakeney wallpaper. Both of which are key to the vision spinning 'round in my head.
Now for a more immediate diy debacle in the making. This bed:
I got it off craigslist for $100! If you can see past the green strippedness of it, it's super amazing. It came from Crate and Barrel, so it's of a high quality and weighs a ton! The "high quality" was the first hurdle. I tried to reupholster it a few months back and straight up, gave up. The fabric is stapled like nothing I have ever encountered. I did not remove a single one in an hour of trying, with every tool known to man, and there are thousands of them! So I've been back to the drawing board since. I'm not crazy about my bedroom, so it's not killing me. It's not like "the one thing that is wrong".
Some things I've been vaguely wanting in a bed for like ever: upholstered, tufted (?), blue, velvet, luxe, chic, child proof (rolls eyes). Things this bed is actually capable of being? Obviously it's upholstered... incapable of being traditionally reupholstered, by me anyway. In my limited experience with upholstering, I successfully did a couch (in blue velvet, go figure), you use the old upholstery as a pattern. I am not experienced or talented at sewing, so I like, need this option but I don't have it here. A solution has been reached. Enter the inspiration:
Pillowcase style slipcover! This bed needs about 12 yards of fabric, velvet is super expensive. Solution numero dos, I bought some West Elm velvet curtains on clearance. The plan is yet to be executed, but I have a good feeling about it, the curtains arrived a couple days ago. I hope to tackle it on Sunday. Hopefully this one and not a month from now. Now that I'm "inspired" I just need to get "motivated" lol.
